Spatio-temporal analysis of maize market arrivals and price behavior in Maharashtra

Abstract

 Maize (Zea mays L.) is a crucial cereal crop
with significant contributions to global food security,
livestock feed, and industrial applications. In India, it
ranks third among cereals and is cultivated across diverse
agro-climatic regions, with Maharashtra being a major
producing state. Despite its production potential, maize
marketing faces challenges including price volatility,
seasonal gluts, and inadequate storage infrastructure. This
study analyzed monthly time-series data on maize market
arrivals and wholesale prices from 2012 to 2021 across
nine key markets in Maharashtra, representing Western
Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha regions.
Correlation and regression analyses were employed to
examine the relationship between arrivals and prices.
Results indicated that in most markets, arrivals were
inversely correlated with prices, reflecting typical supply
demand dynamics, particularly during peak harvest
months. Intra- and inter-year analyses revealed significant
spatial and temporal variations, with some markets
exhibiting positive correlations due to off-season supply
or higher local demand. Regression results showed that
previous month prices positively and significantly
influenced current prices, while arrivals generally exerted
a negative but mostly non-significant effect. Findings
underscore the importance of strategic storage, improved market intelligence, and policy interventions to stabilize
prices and enhance farmer income. Region-specific
marketing strategies and infrastructure development are
essential to mitigate price fluctuations and strengthen the
maize value chain in Maharashtra.
